Does water purifier filters out contamination like Virus, Bacteria including COVID-19?

While the world is fighting with pandemic COVID-19, there are a lot of question in mind of people regarding corona virus and its spread. One of them is can coronavirus spread through water? Are the water purifier that we are using at home can filter out COVID-19 virus?

In order to understand this let us see different type of impurities and effectiveness of the water purification process.

Water may contain impurities that can be physical, chemical or biological.

  • Physical impurity (TDS, TSS, color, odor, taste etc.)

  • Chemical impurity (pH, Hardness, Alkalinity, COD, BOD, pesticides etc.)

  • Microbiological impurity (E. coli, coli form, toxicity taste, plate count, bacteria, virus etc.)

In a response to query asked CDC which stands for centre for disease control and prevention (USA) have replied that

“The virus that causes COVID-19 has not been detected in drinking water. Conventional water treatment methods that use filtration and disinfection, such as those in most municipal drinking water systems, should remove or inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19.”

As of now there is no evidence of spreading of coronavirus through water is found but even then question remain is the water purifier being used in home can filter out corona virus?

Water purifier uses various technique for water purification. Not all water purification technique results in virus free pure water.

Centre for Disease Control & Prevention, Atlanta has issued a Guide to Drinking Water Treatment Technologies for Household, which is as under:

This makes clear that for treating biological impurities like bacteria, virus the filtration process that is most suitable are Nano-filtration, RO purification and UV treatment.

If you consider size of different contaminants then bacteria are having size 0.2 to 1 micron & viruses between 0.02 to 0.4 microns.

Which means, filtration process like nanofiltration and RO are very much suitable to filter out bacteria and viruses.

What is the size of COVID-19 virus?

Reverse osmosis filter has a pore size of approximately 0.0001 micron.

Therefore nanofiltration and RO is also suitable for filtering out COVID-19 presence in water, if found and thus giving you clean drinking water.

So what does this mean?

If we see the table in which filtration process and its effectiveness is shown, you can reach to following conclusion.

  • RO water purification system is the best way to eliminate all possible water contamination. It is very effective against biological impurities, chemical and physical impurities.

  • UV water treatment is very much effective against biological treatment as powerful UV rays kills the waterborne bacteria.

  • Microfiltration alone is not an effective solution for water purification
